Steam Coil Calculator

Guide for steam heating coil selection and sizing: steam pressure, condensate management, face velocity, and coil configuration.

1. Overview

Steam coils use the latent heat of steam condensation to heat air. Steam enters the coil as saturated or slightly superheated vapor and exits as condensate (liquid). The high heat transfer coefficient during condensation makes steam coils very compact and efficient for high-capacity heating applications.

The calculator supports both standard steam coils and distributing tube designs for uniform heating across the coil face.

2. Input Parameters

Steam Side

ParameterUnitDescription
Steam PressurekPaGauge pressure (15–1000 kPa typical)
Steam Quality—Dryness fraction at inlet (typically 0.95–1.0)

Air Side

ParameterUnitTypical Range
Entering Air Temperature°C-30 to 25°C
Air Flow Ratem³/h500–200,000
Altitudem0–3,000

3. Steam Pressure Selection

CategoryPressure RangeSaturation TempApplication
Low Pressure15–100 kPa100–120°CHVAC heating, reheat coils
Medium Pressure100–500 kPa120–159°CIndustrial process heating
High Pressure500–1000 kPa159–184°CHeavy industrial, drying

4. Condensate Management

Proper condensate removal is critical for steam coil performance and longevity:

  • Steam trap sizing: use 2.5× safety factor on calculated condensate rate
  • Install vacuum breakers to prevent coil damage during shutdown
  • Pitch condensate piping toward the trap (minimum 1:100 slope)
  • Use float & thermostatic traps for modulating applications

Warning: Accumulated condensate in steam coils exposed to sub-zero air can freeze and rupture the tubes. Always use distributing tube designs or face-and-bypass control for preheat applications.

5. Design Guidelines

  • Typically 1–2 rows (steam's high HTC means fewer rows needed)
  • Face velocity: 2.5–5.0 m/s (higher than water coils due to no condensation on air side)
  • For preheat applications with outdoor air below 0°C, use distributing tube design
  • Consider face-and-bypass damper control for capacity modulation

6. Applications

  • AHU Preheat: Heating outdoor air before mixing with return air
  • AHU Main Heating: Primary heating when steam is the available energy source
  • Industrial Drying: High-temperature air for drying processes
  • Humidification Preheat: Heating air before steam humidification injection
