Dry coolers and fluid coolers

Dry cooler selection and design software

Size dry coolers for chillers, process cooling and data centres. ExCoil solves the coil in counter-cross flow with real water and glycol properties and tells you when the requested capacity cannot be reached.

Calculator included in the free plan · The calculator interface is available in English and Portuguese.

What it calculates

  • Water, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol
  • Counter-cross-flow row model with the fluid entering at the air-leaving row
  • Balanced solver for a target capacity with an explicit 'target not met' result
  • Flat and V-shape arrangements that conserve the total airflow
  • Fluid velocity and pressure drop per circuit
  • Weight estimate from the physical tube count

Results and deliverables

  • Capacity, fluid outlet temperature and approach
  • Fluid velocity and pressure drop
  • Air pressure drop and face velocity
  • PDF report and drawings according to your plan

How the dry cooler model works

The fluid-side coefficient uses Gnielinski with real glycol properties and the air side uses Wang–Chi–Chang. Non-uniform air distribution is applied as an area derating, and the air-fluid energy balance closes to numerical precision.

  • Counter-cross-flow row marching
  • Gnielinski with real water/EG/PG properties
  • Wang–Chi–Chang (2000) air side
  • Bisection on flow for balanced selections

Know the limits

  • Adiabatic pre-cooling and fan acoustics are not modelled.
  • Fan power is not calculated from a fan curve.

Frequently asked questions

Can ExCoil size a glycol dry cooler?

Yes. Choose water, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol with the concentration, and the properties are applied to heat transfer and pressure drop.

Is a V-shape dry cooler supported?

Yes. V-shape layouts split the coil while conserving the total airflow through both faces.
