About ExCoil
ExCoil is a professional SaaS platform for thermal analysis and selection of finned-tube heat exchangers. Built by HVAC&R engineers, for engineers, with industry-standard calculation methods and practical engineering tools.
What ExCoil does
ExCoil provides engineering-grade thermal calculations for six types of finned-tube heat exchangers: DX evaporators, DX condensers, chilled water coils, hot water coils, steam coils, and dry coolers. The platform uses segment-by-segment solvers with real refrigerant properties, two-phase heat transfer correlations, and fin efficiency calculations.
Engineering approach
The thermal engine discretizes each coil into 50 segments, solving energy balance equations iteratively with real fluid properties at each point. This captures the non-linear behavior of two-phase flows, superheat/subcool regions, and the actual temperature profile across the coil — something simplified LMTD methods cannot do accurately.
Air-side heat transfer uses the Wang et al. (1999) correlation for plain fins and Kim et al. for wavy/louvered fins, validated against experimental data. Fluid-side correlations include Gnielinski for turbulent flow, Shah for condensation, and the Lockhart-Martinelli approach for two-phase pressure drop.
Every calculation includes automatic energy balance verification. The solver checks that the total heat transfer on the air side matches the fluid side within numerical tolerance. This ensures that results are physically consistent before being presented to the engineer.
