DX Condenser Calculator

Comprehensive guide for air-cooled condenser coil design: desuperheating, condensation, subcooling zones, and performance optimization.

1. Overview

The DX Condenser Calculator models an air-cooled finned-tube heat exchanger where superheated refrigerant vapor is cooled, condensed, and subcooled. The engine uses a 3-zone segmented approach: desuperheating (vapor → saturated vapor), condensation (two-phase), and subcooling (saturated liquid → subcooled liquid). Each zone has distinct heat transfer characteristics.

2. Input Parameters

Air Side

ParameterUnitTypical Range
Ambient Temperature°C25–46°C
Air Flow Ratem³/h1,000–200,000
Altitudem0–3,000

Refrigerant Side

ParameterUnitDescription
Condensing Temperature°CSaturation temperature (typically 40–55°C)
Discharge SuperheatKCompressor discharge superheat (typically 30–60 K)
SubcoolingKTarget subcooling (typically 3–8 K)
Mass Flow Ratekg/hRating mode only; Sizing mode auto-calculates

3. Three-Zone Model

The condenser is divided into three distinct heat transfer zones:

ZoneProcessHTC Range
DesuperheatingVapor cooling from discharge to saturation50–150 W/m²·K
CondensationTwo-phase: vapor → liquid at constant temperature1,000–5,000 W/m²·K
SubcoolingLiquid cooling below saturation temperature200–800 W/m²·K

The condensation zone typically accounts for 70–85% of the total heat rejection. The desuperheating zone contributes 10–20%, and subcooling 5–10%.

4. Results Interpretation

  • Total Capacity: Sum of Q_dsh + Q_cond + Q_sc (kW)
  • Zone Breakdown: Individual capacity for each zone
  • Leaving Air Temperature: Air temperature after passing over the condenser
  • Status Indicators: OK, NO_CONDENSE (insufficient area), NO_SUBCOOL (no subcooling achieved), LIMITED_UA

5. Design Guidelines

  • Face velocity: 2.0–3.5 m/s for outdoor condensers
  • Condensing temperature: 10–15°C above ambient for standard efficiency
  • Subcooling: 3–5 K minimum to ensure liquid reaches the expansion device
  • Typically 1–3 rows for residential, 2–4 rows for commercial

Warning: If the status shows NO_CONDENSE, the coil surface area is insufficient to fully condense the refrigerant. Increase the number of rows, coil width, or tubes per row.
